Peter and the Chinese 1980-1984

In addition to his art and art-teaching, making music has always been part of Peter Jansen's existence.
In his early teens his trumpet teacher was Wybe Buma of the Dutch Swing College Band. He played the trumpet
in several amateur jazz bands. Later on he started to play percussion instruments and in 1980,
when he connected his conga's to electronic synthesizers, he created completely new sounds and rhythms.
Together with his colleague in art Evert Maliangkay he started the band 'Peter and the Chinese', an electronic percussion duo
that was completed with various guest percussionists, drummers and soloists at every gig.
Among them: Bobby Desauvagier (acoustic percussion), Rutger van Otterloo: (tenor- and baritone saxophone),
Martin van Duinhoven (drums), Hitomi Endo (Japanese flute), but they also used recorded tapes (Kiss FM, New York)
and the heart beat of Jan Grashuis.
Until 1985 (when their other duties took over) they performed at art houses and jazz clubs.

These were all completely improvised concerts. Among others: Academy of Fine Arts, Rotterdam 1982,

Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam 1983, Bimhuis, Amsterdam 1983.
